BECOMING AN INSTRUCTOR : TRAINING

Our approach to training

We want to do things differently

These are some of the essential components of our approach to driver instructor training:

  • We are not a conveyor belt.
  • We do not put you in a classroom, with dozens of other trainees and tell you to get on with it.
  • The vast majority of your training is done in the best place to learn this trade – the car - and on a one to one basis with just you and your trainer- who specializes in instructor training not just a standard ADI.
  • Continuity and motivation are key for your success, but you do not want to do your training so quickly that you have no hope of passing the exams.
  • You cannot learn to be a driving instructor on a one week course – this style of training is not recommended by the Driving Standards Agency.
  • You are unique and we treat you as such, designing the course around your requirements.

Part 1 - The Theory Test

We provide you with all the recommended books to study together with a dedicated Study Guide covering the subjects that you need to study. The Study Guide is further broken down into small study units which tell you exactly which sections of the books to read. Each unit has a test to check your understanding before moving on to the next unit - you will always know how well you are doing and how much of the course you still have to study. We do not just give you a pile of books and some questions to answer. The Study Guide will give you a planned step by step approach to learn at your own pace in a structured manner.

Once you have completed the Study Guide you have then covered the whole syllabus and then work through the D.S.A question bank which contains every question you will be asked in the real exam. The amount of training supplied by us for Part 1 is unlimited and is dependent on whatever you personally require - it is all one to one.

During your study for Part 1 you will attend 4 practical training sessions - 3 in-car each one lasting 2 hours:

Session 1 will cover  Part 2 driver training to help you understand your Part 1 and prepare you for the Part 2 course.

Sessions 2 and 3 will cover part 3 training which will help you have a better understanding of the instructional techniques in part 1 and prepare you for the Part 3 course.

Session 4 will cover the Part 1 Theory and Hazard Perception Test and will be classroom based giving you the best preparation for the test. This session may be done in groups of 2 to 4.

Part 2  - Test of Driving Ability

We provide you with 10 hours in-car tuition designed to bring your own driving up to the standard required to pass Part 2, plus a comprehensive manual covering the whole syllabus.  Not only do we teach you the way you should drive but also ensure you understand why you should drive this way. This will help you develop your fault identification, analysis and remedial action skills (known as the core competencies) so vital for the Part 3 exam.

Your training can be scheduled to suit you and your commitments.

We recommend 6 x 1.5 hour sessions plus a one hour warm up drive before your Part 2 test.

It may be more convenient for you to do your training in blocks – particularly if you are training on a residential basis.

This training is conducted on a one to one basis to maximize your preparation for the test.

Part 3  - Test of Instructional Ability

We provide you with 40 hours in-car one to one tuition to teach you how to instruct pupils.

The emphasis is on in-car tuition where your trainer will expertly role play pupils of various standards and you will instruct the trainer as requested in the subjects required to pass the Part 3 test. You will also be given a Part 3 manual which gives you model lessons plans for every subject, plus ‘Visual Lesson Briefings’ which is an invaluable teaching aid containing colour laminated diagrams to help you teach every subject in a professional manner.

Again, your training can be scheduled around your current commitments.

To maximize the benefit from these sessions we recommend they are done in blocks of 2 hours at a time enabling you to have private practice between sessions. For those who wish to speed up this process, a Fast Track course can be arranged.

This training is conducted on a one to one basis to maximize your preparation for the test.

Once you pass Part 3 you are then fully qualified and can apply to enter the register of ADI’s and can then claim to be a Driving Standards Agency Approved Driving Instructor - and put the letters DSA ADI (Cars) after your name!
